Universeum

Overview

Universeum is the largest science centre in the Nordic countries, housed in a dramatic postmodern building designed by Gert Wingårdh. It spans seven floors and contains everything from a tropical rainforest with free-flying birds and poison dart frogs to a deep-ocean aquarium and hands-on science labs.

History

Universeum opened in 2001 as a collaboration between Gothenburg's universities, Chalmers University of Technology, and the city government. The building's eco-conscious design recycles water through its rainforest levels, and the centre's mission is to inspire curiosity across all ages.

• Tip 1: Arrive at opening time — the rainforest gets crowded by noon on weekends and school holidays.
• Tip 2: Don't skip the rooftop — it houses an outdoor science park with experiments in wind, water, and construction.
