The Southern Gothenburg Archipelago is a chain of car-free islands accessible by public ferry from Saltholmen. Styrsö, Donsö, Brännö, and Vrångö each have distinct characters — from fishing villages and craft studios to swimming rocks and sandy coves. Hopping between them is one of Gothenburg's most rewarding day trips.
The southern archipelago has been inhabited since the Viking Age, with fishing as the primary livelihood for centuries. As Gothenburg industrialised, the islands became popular bathing destinations. Today they are part of the Västtrafik public transport network — the ferry ride is covered by a standard tram ticket.
