Slottsskogen is Gothenburg's most beloved city park — a 137-hectare green lung with open meadows, ancient oaks, ponds, and a free mini-zoo with Nordic animals. Locals use it year-round for jogging, picnics, and the annual Way Out West music festival.
Slottsskogen was inaugurated as a public park in 1876, designed in the English landscape style with winding paths and natural features. The name means "Castle Forest," referencing Gothenburg's lost 17th-century Älvsborg Castle. The animal park was added in the 1890s and remains a favourite with families.
