Gothenburg City Museum

Overview

Stadsmuseet (Gothenburg City Museum) tells the story of the city from its founding in 1621 to the present day. It occupies the handsome 18th-century headquarters of the Swedish East India Company on Norra Hamngatan, one of Gothenburg's most historically significant buildings.

History

The museum was established in 1861 and moved into the East India Company building in 1861. The building served as the company's offices and warehouse from 1750 until its dissolution in 1813. It is one of Sweden's finest examples of 18th-century commercial architecture.
