Gothenburg Cathedral (Domkyrkan) is the seat of the Diocese of Gothenburg, a serene neoclassical church completed in 1815. Its austere exterior belies a luminous interior with a gilded altarpiece and an unusual post and lintel arrangement that gives the nave a classical Greek temple feel.
The current cathedral is the third on this site; the first two were destroyed by city fires in 1721 and 1802. Architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg designed the present building in a monumental neoclassical style, and it was consecrated in 1815. A major restoration in the 1950s uncovered the original colour scheme.
