Republic Square

Overview

Republic Square (Trg Republike) is Belgrade's central public square and the city's main meeting point. Anchored by the equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo and flanked by the National Museum and the National Theatre, it serves as the starting point for exploring the old town.

Highlights

• Prince Mihailo Monument: An 1882 equestrian bronze by Enrico Pazzi, Belgrade's most recognized meeting landmark — 'see you at the Horse' is the local shorthand.
• National Theatre: Serbia's oldest professional theatre (1869), presenting opera, ballet, and drama in a restored Renaissance Revival building.

History

The square took its current form after World War II, when surrounding Ottoman-era buildings were replaced with socialist-era blocks. Major renovation completed in 2020 added new granite paving, upgraded lighting, and improved pedestrian flow to and from Knez Mihailova.
