Dorćol is one of Belgrade's oldest neighborhoods, stretching from Knez Mihailova down toward the Danube. Its Ottoman-era street grid has been overlaid with Habsburg-era facades, craft coffee shops, and independent boutiques, making it a local favourite for afternoon strolls.
The name Dorćol comes from the Turkish 'dört yol' meaning 'four roads' or crossroads. Under Ottoman rule, the neighborhood was a commercial center with hans (caravanserais) and bazaars. The upper section retains grand 19th-century townhouses; the lower part near the river has a grittier, more industrial feel.
