The Church of Saint Sava is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, rising 70 metres above the Vračar plateau. Its white marble and granite exterior, crowned by a massive dome, dominates the Belgrade skyline. The interior features 15,000 square metres of gold-leaf mosaics completed in 2020.
Construction began in 1935 on the site where Ottoman commander Sinan Pasha allegedly burned the relics of Saint Sava in 1595. Work was interrupted by World War II and decades of communist rule. The exterior was largely complete by the 2000s, but the interior mosaics — funded partly by Russia — were only finished in 2020.
