Overview
Avala Tower is a 205-metre telecommunications tower on Avala Mountain, 16 km south of central Belgrade. It is the tallest structure in Serbia and one of few towers in the world built from reinforced concrete in a triangular prism design, with an observation deck at 135 metres.
Highlights
- Observation Deck: Panoramic views stretching up to 100 km on clear days, encompassing the Belgrade skyline and the Pannonian plain.
- Triangular Architecture: The unique three-legged design, by architects Uglješa Bogunović and Slobodan Janjić, makes it unlike any other tower in the world.
- Avala Mountain Trails: Forested hiking and biking trails surround the tower.
History
The original tower, built in 1965, was destroyed by NATO bombing on 29 April 1999. A faithful reconstruction was completed in 2010 using the exact same design, funded by public subscription and commercial sponsorship.
