Torgallmenningen

Overview

Torgallmenningen is Bergen's central pedestrian square and principal public gathering place. Stretching from the harbour toward the park belt, it is lined with shops, cafés, and the landmark Sailors' Monument (Sjømannsmonumentet).

History

The square has been Bergen's main marketplace and civic gathering space since the medieval period. It was redesigned after the great fire of 1916 and pedestrianised in the 1990s. The Sailors' Monument was unveiled in 1950.
