Stoltzekleiven Stairs

Overview

Stoltzekleiven is an 850-step staircase climbing the hillside behind Sandviken to the summit of Sandviksfjellet (378 m). Built as a fitness trail, it has become a cult workout for Bergen locals and a surprisingly popular tourist attraction for the views at the top.

History

The original path was created in the late 19th century. Improved wooden and stone steps were installed by the Bergen and Hordaland chapter of the Norwegian Trekking Association. The stairs were most recently refurbished in 2013.

Visitor Tips

• Start early: The stairs face east, so morning light and cooler temperatures make the climb more pleasant.
• Take it slow: The ascent takes 20–40 minutes depending on fitness.
• Duration: 45–75 minutes round trip.
