Old Bergen Museum (Gamle Bergen)

Overview

Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Museum) is an open-air museum consisting of around 55 relocated wooden houses arranged as a small 18th- and 19th-century town. Costumed guides lead visitors through period-furnished interiors, recreating daily life in old Bergen.

History

The museum was founded in 1934 by Kristian Blytt, who rescued wooden buildings from Bergen's rapid urban development. Houses were dismantled, numbered, transported, and reassembled on the Elsero site in Sandviken.

• Best in summer: Guided tours and costumed re-enactments run from mid-May to August.
• Bus access: Take bus 4 from the city centre (15 min).
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
