The hiking trail to the summit of Mt. Ulriken (643 m) is Bergen's most popular mountain hike, offering challenging terrain and spectacular panoramic rewards. The trail starts from the Montana youth hostel area and climbs steeply through birch forest before emerging above the treeline.
Ulriken has been a recreational hiking destination since the 19th century. The trail was formalised by Bergen and Hordaland Turlag (the hiking association) and is maintained by volunteers. The cable car, opened in 1961, made the summit accessible to non-hikers.
