Fantoft Stave Church

Overview

Fantoft Stave Church is a reconstructed 12th-century stave church set in a forested clearing south of Bergen centre. Though the original was destroyed by arson in 1992, it was meticulously rebuilt and re-consecrated in 1997 using traditional techniques.

• Dragon-head carvings: Ornate wooden dragon finials on the roof ridges, characteristic of Norwegian stave architecture.

History

The original church was built around 1150 in Fortun, Sogn og Fjordane, and relocated to Fantoft in 1883. It was tragically burned down in June 1992 and rebuilt with new timber following the original plans. The church is owned by the University of Bergen.

Visitor Tips

• Access: Take the Bergen Light Rail to Fantoft station, then a 10-minute uphill walk.
• Summer only: The church interior is typically open mid-May to mid-September.
• Duration: 20–30 minutes.
