Luchtsingel Bridge

Overview

The Luchtsingel is a 390-metre-long bright yellow pedestrian bridge connecting three previously disconnected areas of northern Rotterdam. Crowdfunded by citizens, it was the first infrastructure project in the world financed through public donations.

• Crowdfunded Planks: Individual planks bear the names of 17,000+ donors who funded €4 million of the bridge.
• Urban Connector: Links Rotterdam Centraal Station area to the Hofbogen and Pompenburg park.
• Rooftop Garden: Connects to the DakAkker, Europe's largest commercial rooftop farm.

History

Designed by ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles) and completed in phases between 2012 and 2015. It was conceived as an experiment in citizen-funded urbanism and has become a symbol of Rotterdam's grassroots innovation culture.
