Laurenskerk

Overview

The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk is Rotterdam's only surviving medieval building, a late-Gothic church originally built between 1449 and 1525. Severely damaged in the 1940 bombing, it was meticulously restored and reopened in 1952.

Highlights

• Bronze Doors: Three pairs of monumental bronze doors by Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù.
• Main Organ: A magnificent Baroque organ case from 1694 with 7,600 pipes.
• Tomb of Gijsbert de Raedt: A 16th-century admiral's tomb with fine Renaissance sculpture.

History

Construction began in 1449 and the church was completed in 1525. The 1940 German bombing devastated the interior, but the walls and tower survived. Restoration took 12 years and the church was rededicated in 1952.
