Overview
Kralingse Bos is a 200-hectare urban forest and lake on Rotterdam's east side, popular for jogging, cycling, sailing, and picnicking. The Kralingse Plas lake at its centre is one of the city's best recreational spots.
Highlights
- Kralingse Plas: A large lake with a sandy beach area, sailing boats, and waterfront cafés.
- Forest Trails: Extensive paths through mature woodland — ideal for running or cycling.
- Windmill De Ster: A 1740 snuff mill on the lake shore, one of Rotterdam's few surviving windmills.
History
The area was developed as a recreation ground in the 1930s when a peat bog was converted into the current lake. The surrounding forest was planted to provide a green escape for the city's residents.
