Overview
The Erasmusbrug is a 802-metre cable-stayed bridge spanning the Nieuwe Maas river, connecting the north and south halves of Rotterdam. Designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996, its asymmetric white pylon earned it the nickname "The Swan."
Highlights
- The Swan Pylon: The 139-metre asymmetric pylon is an instantly recognizable silhouette on the Rotterdam skyline.
- Bascule Section: The southern section is a bascule bridge that opens for large vessels — a rare sight worth catching.
- Night Illumination: The bridge is spectacularly lit at night, making it a prime photo spot.
History
Built between 1990 and 1996 to physically and symbolically reconnect Rotterdam's north bank with the redeveloping Kop van Zuid district on the south bank. It cost €165 million and has hosted events including the Tour de France start in 2010.
