Overview
The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, opened in 2021. The mirrored, bowl-shaped building designed by MVRDV holds 151,000 artworks across five climate-controlled zones.
Highlights
- Visible Storage: See artworks hung on racks, stored in drawers, and organized by material — a behind-the-scenes view rarely offered by museums.
- Rooftop Garden: A public rooftop with a birch forest and panoramic views over Museumpark and the city skyline.
- Mirror Façade: The 6,609 mirrored panels reflect the surrounding park, sky, and cityscape.
History
Created because Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (closed for renovation until 2028) needed to store its collection publicly. The Depot opened on 5 November 2021 after a €100 million construction.
Visitor Tips
