Town Hall Square

Overview

Town Hall Square (Rātslaukums) is the main public square in Riga's Old Town, framed by the reconstructed House of the Blackheads, the Town Hall, and the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. It serves as the setting for the city's major public events, including the famous Christmas market.

Highlights

• Christmas market: Riga claims to be the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree (1510), and the square hosts a handsome seasonal market.
• Roland statue: A 2.6-metre statue of the knight Roland, symbolic protector of medieval trading cities.
• Blackheads backdrop: The photogenic House of the Blackheads dominates the square's eastern side.

History

The square has been Riga's civic centre since the 14th century. Heavily damaged in World War II, it was left as a car park during the Soviet era. The square was reconstructed in the 1990s and early 2000s alongside the rebuilding of the House of the Blackheads.

• Tip 1: Most atmospheric in December during the Christmas market, but attractive year-round.
