Highlights
- Bell tower: The free-standing belfry, originally a defensive tower of the Lower Castle, stands 57 metres tall at the edge of the square.
- Stebuklas tile: A coloured pavement tile marking the endpoint of the Baltic Way — stepping on it and spinning is a local good-luck ritual.
- Christmas market: One of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Northern Europe, featuring a towering tree and craft stalls.
History
The open space in front of the cathedral has served as a public gathering place since Vilnius became the capital in the 14th century. It was named Cathedral Square after Lithuanian independence and has been the site of political rallies, papal visits, and cultural festivals.
