Overview
Piazza dei Signori (also called Piazza Dante) is the elegant governmental counterpart to the market bustle of Piazza delle Erbe. Surrounded by Renaissance palaces connected by overhead arches, it feels like a grand outdoor salon.
Highlights
- Dante Monument: An 1865 marble statue of Dante Alighieri, who lived in Verona during his exile, stands at the center.
- Loggia del Consiglio: A graceful 15th-century loggia considered one of the finest early Renaissance buildings in northern Italy.
- Palazzo della Ragione: The medieval courthouse, now home to the Galleria d'Arte Moderna.
History
The square was the seat of Scaliger and Venetian government. Dante Alighieri found refuge here with Cangrande della Scala in 1303–1304 during his exile from Florence. The surrounding buildings served administrative and judicial functions for centuries.
Visitor Tips
- Pair with Piazza delle Erbe: The two squares connect via the Arco della Costa (look for the whale rib hanging from the arch).
- Evening: The square is beautifully lit at night and much quieter than its neighbor.
- Duration: 15–30 minutes.
