Basilica di Santa Anastasia

Overview

Santa Anastasia is the largest church in Verona and the city's most impressive Gothic interior. Built by Dominican friars, it contains Pisanello's famous fresco of St George and the Princess and two charming crouching figures (Gobbi) supporting the holy water stoups.

• Pisanello's Fresco: "St George and the Princess of Trebizond" (c. 1436) is one of the last great works of International Gothic painting.
• The Gobbi: Two crouching marble figures at the entrance holding the holy water basins — a beloved Veronese symbol.

History

Construction began in 1290 and continued for nearly two centuries. The Dominican order built the church to accommodate large congregations for preaching. Despite its dedication to St Anastasia, local tradition always used the older name of the site's original church, Sant'Anastasia.

• Binoculars: Bring them (or use your phone zoom) for the Pisanello fresco, which is high in the Pellegrini Chapel.
• Combined ticket: Part of the Verona Church ticket covering four major churches.
