Spianata Castelletto

Overview

The Spianata Castelletto is a panoramic terrace perched on the hillside above the city centre, offering one of Genoa's most celebrated views. The sweeping panorama takes in the whole Old Port, the medieval rooftop skyline, the Lanterna lighthouse, and the open sea beyond.

History

The terrace occupies the site of a medieval fortress (castelletto) that was demolished in the 19th century to open up the view. The public lift was inaugurated in 1909 and remains a beloved Genoese institution — a working piece of Art Nouveau infrastructure.
