Overview
Genoa's Centro Storico is the largest medieval historic centre in Europe, a dense labyrinth of narrow alleys (caruggi) that once housed sailors, merchants, and aristocrats side by side. Stretching from the port to the hills, it contains an astonishing concentration of medieval towers, baroque churches, and hidden palaces.
Highlights
- Caruggi: The narrow lanes — some barely wide enough for two people — create a shadowy, atmospheric world away from the modern city.
- Hidden churches: Over 100 churches are tucked into the old town, many with sumptuously decorated baroque interiors.
- Street life: Focaccerie, pesto shops, vintage stores, and artisan workshops line every alley.
History
The medieval centre grew organically around the port from the 10th century, packed within defensive walls. Unlike many Italian cities, Genoa never demolished its medieval core for 19th-century boulevards (the Haussmann-style streets were built alongside). The result is an almost intact medieval urban fabric spanning 113 hectares.
Visitor Tips
- Get lost: The best strategy is to wander without a map and discover unexpected piazzas and churches.
- Focaccia: Stop at any bakery for focaccia di Genova — the city's signature snack.
