Overview
Mount Etna, Europe's tallest and most active volcano at 3,357 metres, looms over Catania and is the city's most iconic natural attraction. Day trips from Catania reach the Rifugio Sapienza base station (1,900 m) and, with a cable car and guide, the summit craters at over 3,000 metres.
Highlights
- Summit craters: Guided treks to the active summit offer surreal moonscape views, steaming fumaroles, and recent lava flows.
- Silvestri Craters: Easily accessible extinct craters near Rifugio Sapienza, surrounded by black lava fields.
- Circumetnea railway: A narrow-gauge train circles the volcano through hilltop villages — an alternative scenic half-day experience.
History
Etna has been erupting for approximately 500,000 years and is one of the most documented volcanoes in history. Major eruptions in 1669, 1928, and 2021 have shaped the landscape and the lives of Catanesi. UNESCO inscribed Etna as a World Heritage Site in 2013 for its outstanding geological and scientific significance.
