The Lungomare di Catania is the city's scenic waterfront promenade stretching from the port area through the Ognina district along the Ionian coast. Offering views of the sea, volcanic rock formations, and — on clear days — Mount Etna, it is popular for evening walks, jogging, and al fresco dining.
The waterfront road was developed in the early 20th century as Catania expanded eastward. The lava-stone shoreline was shaped primarily by the massive 1669 eruption, which extended the coastline significantly. In recent decades, the promenade has been improved with pedestrian paths, lighting, and public art.
