The Fontana dell'Amenano is a graceful Carrara-marble fountain at the southern edge of Piazza del Duomo, marking the spot where the underground Amenano River resurfaces briefly. Locals call it "l'acqua a linzolu" (water of the sheet) for the way water cascades in a smooth veil over the basin.
Sculpted by Tito Angelini in 1867, the fountain replaced an earlier simpler version. The Amenano River, which once flowed openly through Catania, was buried by successive Etna eruptions and urban development. This fountain is one of the few points where its waters are still visible above ground.
