Tkalčićeva Street is Zagreb's liveliest pedestrian street, a curving stretch of colorful houses filled with cafés, bars, and restaurants. Running along the former Medveščak stream between Gornji Grad and Kaptol, it's the center of Zagreb's famed café culture.
The street follows the course of the Medveščak stream, which was covered over in the early 20th century. What was once a dividing line between the rival medieval settlements of Gradec and Kaptol became a vibrant social hub. The street is named after Croatian linguist Andrija Torkvat Brlić-Tkalčević but locals simply call it "Tkal."
