Kaptol is the ecclesiastical quarter of Zagreb, centered on the Cathedral and its fortified enclosure. The neighborhood's quiet streets, seminary buildings, and small squares provide a contemplative contrast to the bustling Lower Town.
Kaptol has been the seat of the Zagreb bishopric (later archbishopric) since 1094. For centuries it was a separate and often rival settlement to neighboring Gradec, complete with its own walls and laws. The two merged in 1850 to form the modern city.
