People's Square (Pjaca)

Overview

People's Square (Narodni Trg), known locally as Pjaca, has been Split's public gathering place since the 14th century. Surrounded by Venetian Gothic and Renaissance buildings, it was the civic center of medieval Split, complementing the ancient Peristyle.

History

As Split outgrew Diocletian's Palace in the medieval period, the People's Square became the new civic center. It served as the seat of municipal government under Venetian rule and remains the social heart of the city.
