Overview
Marjan Hill is a 178-metre forested peninsula west of the Old Town, offering hiking trails, beaches, chapels, and panoramic viewpoints. Often called Split's lungs, this protected park forest has been the city's favorite escape for centuries.
Highlights
- Viewpoints: Multiple viewpoints (Vidilica, Telegrin, First Viewpoint) offer different perspectives of the city, coast, and islands.
- Forest Trails: Pine-scented hiking paths wind through Mediterranean forest with minimal crowds.
- Hidden Chapels: Three hermitage chapels (St. Jerome, St. Nicholas, Our Lady of Bethlehem) are carved into the hillside.
History
Marjan has been recorded as a public green space since the 14th century, when the city authorities began planting pine trees. The first stone steps were carved in the 19th century, and it became a protected nature monument in 1964.
