The Iron Gate (Porta Ferrea) is the western gate of Diocletian's Palace, connecting the palace interior to People's Square (Pjaca). Above the gate sits the oldest church tower in Split, a pre-Romanesque structure from the 11th century.
Built around 305 AD, the Iron Gate became the main connection between the palace and the new medieval town that grew to its west. The church tower was added in the 11th century, making it one of the oldest surviving structures built after the Roman period.
