The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (Sveti Duje) is the oldest Catholic cathedral building in the world still in use for its original purpose. Originally built as Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum in the 4th century, it was converted into a Christian cathedral in the 7th century.
Built as Diocletian's mausoleum around 305 AD, the structure was converted into a cathedral dedicated to Saint Domnius in the 7th century — ironically, a saint martyred under Diocletian's persecution of Christians. The bell tower was added between the 12th and 16th centuries.
