Bačvice Beach is Split's most famous urban beach, a sandy crescent just southeast of the Old Town. It's the birthplace of picigin — a uniquely Croatian ball game played in shallow water that combines volleyball reflexes with balletic leaps.
Bačvice has been Split's main public beach since the early 20th century. The game of picigin was invented here in 1908 and has since been declared an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Annual picigin tournaments draw competitors from across the country.
