Thessaloniki's Byzantine Walls stretch for roughly 4 km along the ridgeline of Ano Poli, remnants of the city's medieval fortifications. Walking along the walls offers a scenic route through the old upper town with panoramic views at every turn.
Originally built in the late Roman period and extensively reinforced during the Byzantine era, the walls protected Thessaloniki through numerous sieges. Much of what stands today dates from the late 4th to early 5th century with later Byzantine and Ottoman additions.
