Palea Kameni is a small volcanic islet west of Nea Kameni where underwater volcanic vents heat the surrounding seawater, creating natural hot springs. Visitors swim from their boats to the sulfurous warm waters in a vivid yellow-green bay that contrasts dramatically with the deep blue Aegean.
Palea Kameni ("Old Burnt Island") first emerged from the sea in 197 BCE during a submarine eruption and is the oldest of the intracaldera volcanic islands. The hot springs on its northeastern shore have been known since antiquity and were used for therapeutic bathing. The geothermal activity is a surface expression of the magma chamber that lies beneath the caldera.
