Megalochori is one of Santorini's most authentically preserved traditional villages, tucked away from the caldera rim in the island's wine-producing heartland. Its neoclassical mansions, underground wine cellars (canavas), and peaceful piazza offer a glimpse of pre-tourism Santorini.
Megalochori was one of the wealthiest villages on Santorini in the 19th century, enriched by wine production and maritime trade. The village produced much of the famous Vinsanto dessert wine exported across Europe. Unlike the caldera villages, it survived the 1956 earthquake with less damage, preserving its original architectural character.
