Imerovigli is the highest village on the Santorini caldera rim, sitting at 300 meters above sea level and earning its nickname as the "Balcony to the Aegean." Quieter and more elegant than Fira and Oia, it offers arguably the best caldera views on the island combined with a serene, unhurried atmosphere.
Imerovigli's name derives from the Greek word "imerovigli" (day watch), reflecting its historical role as a lookout point where guards watched for approaching pirate ships. The village was once more densely populated but many residents relocated to Fira after the 1956 earthquake. Today it has fewer than 500 permanent residents.
