Fira (Thira) is the vibrant capital of Santorini, built along the edge of the caldera at an elevation of 260 meters above sea level. The town combines a lively commercial center with dramatic volcanic scenery, offering a mix of shopping, dining, nightlife, and spectacular caldera views.
Fira became the island's capital in the late 18th century, replacing the fortified hilltop settlement of Pyrgos. After the 1956 earthquake destroyed nearly all its buildings, the town was rebuilt in a mix of traditional Cycladic and neoclassical styles. Today it is Santorini's commercial and administrative center with over 2,000 permanent residents.
