Ancient Thera

Overview

Ancient Thera is an archaeological site spread across the ridgetop of Mesa Vouno at 396 meters above sea level, between Kamari and Perissa. The ruins span nearly a millennium of occupation, from the 9th century BCE through the Roman period, offering both historical depth and breathtaking panoramic views.

Highlights

• Agora and Stoa Basilike: The civic center of the ancient city with a well-preserved Royal Stoa.
• Terrace of the Festivals: An open area used for gymnastic competitions and festivals with rock-carved inscriptions.
• Ptolemaic garrison remains: Evidence of the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty's military presence in the 3rd century BCE.

History

Founded by Dorian colonists from Sparta around the 9th century BCE, Thera served as a major trading hub and naval base. The Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt used it as a strategic garrison in the 3rd century BCE. The site was excavated by German archaeologist Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen between 1896 and 1902.

• Tip 1: Access is via a steep, winding road from Kamari — drive, take a taxi, or hike the zigzag path (about 45 minutes up).
• Tip 2: There is no shade on-site, so bring sun protection and water.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
