Tsambika Beach

Overview

Tsambika Beach is a long sweep of fine golden sand on the east coast, backed by low dunes and overlooked by the Tsambika Monastery perched on a dramatic clifftop 300 metres above. Its warm, shallow water makes it one of Rhodes's best beaches.

History

The beach takes its name from the monastery above, which houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. Women who wish to conceive make a barefoot pilgrimage up the 350 steps to the monastery and light a candle. The beach remained undeveloped until the 1990s.

• Sun Protection: There is little natural shade — bring an umbrella or rent one.
• Monastery Climb: The 350-step climb to the monastery rewards with 360° views.
• Duration: 2–4 hours.
