The Acropolis of Rhodes (Monte Smith) occupies a hillside on the western edge of Rhodes Town, with partially reconstructed ruins of the ancient city's religious and civic centre, including a Temple of Apollo, stadium, and odeion.
This was the religious centre of ancient Rhodes, founded in 408 BC. The Temple of Pythian Apollo crowned the summit, while the stadium and gymnasium served athletes. The site was never heavily built over, and excavations began under the Italians in the early 20th century.
