Acropolis of Lindos

Overview

The Acropolis of Lindos is a dramatic hilltop citadel rising 116 metres above the village and sea. It combines ancient Greek remains — including a 4th-century BC Temple of Athena — with a medieval Crusader fortress, all commanding breathtaking views.

History

Lindos was one of the three ancient Doric cities of Rhodes, founded in the 10th century BC. The sanctuary of Athena attracted pilgrims including Alexander the Great. The Knights of St John fortified the acropolis in the 14th century, adding walls and a governor's palace.

Visitor Tips

• Go Early: Start climbing before 9 AM to avoid both crowds and the midday heat — there's no shade.
• Donkey Ride: Donkeys carry visitors partway up for a fee, though the path is steep.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
