Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. This small, uninhabited island — a 30-minute boat ride from Mykonos — was the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and the religious heart of the ancient Greek world.
Delos was a major religious sanctuary from at least the 3rd millennium BC. It became the treasury of the Delian League in the 5th century BC and later a thriving cosmopolitan trading port. By 88 BC it was sacked and gradually abandoned. Excavations by the French School at Athens began in 1873.
