Karteros Beach is a sandy cove east of Heraklion, sheltered by a small headland and backed by hotels and tavernas. Less crowded than Ammoudara, it offers calm waters and a more relaxed atmosphere, making it popular with families and locals.
The area around Karteros has ancient roots — the nearby Karteros River (Kairatos) is referenced in Minoan texts as a waterway near Knossos. The beach has been a local swimming spot since at least the mid-20th century and was developed with tourism infrastructure in the 1980s.
