The Historical Museum of Crete covers the island's story from early Christian times (4th century CE) through the Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, and modern eras. Housed in a neoclassical mansion on the waterfront, its collection complements the Archaeological Museum by continuing the chronological narrative where Minoan civilization ends.
The museum was founded in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and moved to its current building — the Venetian-era Kalokerinos mansion — in 1964. Its collection spans 17 centuries, with particular depth covering the Cretan Renaissance (15th–17th century) and the resistance movements of WWII.
