Eleftherias Square (Liberty Square) is the largest public square in Heraklion, recently redesigned by architect Falk Jaeger into a modern urban plaza with stepped terraces, greenery, and integrated access to the Archaeological Museum. It serves as the civic heart of the modern city.
The square has been a public space since the early 20th century but underwent a controversial €13-million redesign completed in 2022. The project replaced the traditional tree-lined park with a contemporary stepped design that drew mixed reactions from residents. It is named for the Greek concept of freedom (eleftheria), central to Cretan identity.
