Ammoudara Beach

Overview

Ammoudara is a long, wide sandy beach stretching 5 km west of Heraklion, making it the most accessible beach from the city center. Popular with locals year-round, it offers organized sections with sunbeds and umbrellas alongside quieter stretches of open sand.

History

Ammoudara developed as Heraklion's primary urban beach in the postwar era as the city expanded westward. The area grew from scattered fisherman's huts to a full beach-resort strip through the 1970s and 1980s. It holds a Blue Flag certification and is regularly maintained by the municipality.

Visitor Tips

• Sunbeds: Available for rent (around €8–12 per set), mostly in the eastern section.
• Wind: Can be exposed to the meltemi wind in July–August; the eastern end near the breakwater is more sheltered.
• Duration: 1–3 hours.
