Dresden Transport Museum

Overview

The Verkehrsmuseum Dresden (Dresden Transport Museum) occupies the Johanneum, a Renaissance building on the Neumarkt that once served as the royal stables. The collection covers road, rail, water, and air transport with extensive model railways and historic vehicles.

Highlights

• Model Railway: A massive HO-scale layout depicting Saxon landscapes with over 26 trains running simultaneously.
• Historic Locomotives: Original rolling stock from the Saxon railway system, including replicas of Germany's first long-distance locomotive.

History

Founded in 1952, the museum moved into the Johanneum — originally built in 1586–91 as a stable and coach house — in 1956. The building was once connected to the Fürstenzug via the Long Gallery.
